Child and grandchild

A child born abroad needs the foreign birth record and the Portuguese parent's birth record. A grandchild also needs the grandparent's Portuguese birth record, and that grandparent must be Portuguese by origin and not have lost it. A great-grandchild is not a path in this product.

Portugal

Online filing with the IRN, where it exists, is for a lawyer or solicitador. Doing it yourself means mail or a counter.

Brazil

The Brazilian certificate comes from the cartório that registered the birth. A foreign record that is not in Portuguese, English, Spanish, or French needs a certified translation. Check the current list on the Justice site before you file.

2026 law, grandchildren only

Organic Law no. 1/2026 of 18 May ties Article 1(1)(d) to Article 6(1)(c) through (h). A national of a Portuguese-speaking country is presumed to meet only the language half. Culture, history, and civics still apply. Checked 22 September 2026.
