Are a child and a grandchild the same application?

No. A child born abroad follows Article 1(1)(c) of the Nationality Law: the foreign birth record and the Portuguese parent's birth record. A grandchild follows Article 1(1)(d): the grandparent must be Portuguese by origin and must not have lost it, and the chain includes the parent's birth record in between.

Can a great-grandchild use this?

No. This product stops at the grandparent, the second degree. A great-grandparent does not open a direct application.

What did the 2026 law change for grandchildren?

Organic Law no. 1/2026 of 18 May makes attribution under Article 1(1)(d) depend on Article 6(1)(c) through (h): Portuguese language and culture, history and national symbols, rights, duties, and the organization of the state, a declaration of adherence to the democratic rule of law, the criminal-record limit, the security limit, and UN or EU sanctions. Nationals of a Portuguese-speaking country are presumed to meet only the language half. Culture, history, and civics still apply. Checked against the official journal on 22 September 2026.

Does a Brazilian still need the Portuguese exam?

The presumption covers the language half for a national of a country whose official language is Portuguese. It does not, by itself, cover the culture, history, and civics proof added in 2026. The chat does not treat an old A2 certificate as the whole requirement.
